Purling Hiss at The Hideout - 11.22.14

Too pop to be punk and too punk to be pop, Philadelphia power trio Purling Hiss lit up San Diego's Hideout bar with a blistering set of tunes that left my ears ringing well into the drive home.

The brainchild of guitarist Mike Polizze, Purling Hiss is currently on the road in support of the band's latest long player, the aptly named "Weirdon." In the studio the band has ambitiously flirted with genres such as folk, garage and punk, creating a somewhat eclectic catalog. On stage the boys cut loose with raw energy and abandon, leaving nothing behind.

I'm not entirely sure if the use of projections helped the band's performance this night, especially given the intimacy of the venue. Purling Hiss is a band whose real strength lays in its performance, I could have done without the the audience casting large shadows on the stage from time to time due to the backlighting. Still, it's the music that matters and Purling Hiss definitely delivered in this regard.
