Restless singer-songwriter Cass McCombs is on the road with country-punk mainstays Meat Puppets. Not only are they sharing stages across the US this winter but they've also recently released a limited split 7" single featuring two track apiece (available on Domino Records). The two stopped by San Diego's Casbah on Saturday night as part of a trio of dates in California.
McCombs' set was a thoughtful and at times plaintive counterpoint to the more raucous Meat Puppets while still scratching that alt-country itch. Never seeming content to give the audience what they expected of him, midway through his set McCombs broke out into a torch song interlude featuring the old standard, "Nature Boy," made famous by Nat King Cole. It was an unexpected moment that managed to strike a perfectly melancholy note during his set.
Photos from Saturday night's show are below. Be sure to check out Cass McCombs' official website for future tour dates with Meat Puppets, including a stop at LA's famed Troubadour on Tuesday, December 2 and like Cass McCombs on Facebook for more updates from the road.
