Kaki King returned to LA this past Saturday night at Hollywood Forever's Masonic Lodge to deliver a virtuoso performance accompanied by spellbinding imagery projected both behind her and on her guitar.
I've been giving her latest album, The Neck Is a Bridge to the Body, a lot of attention since it dropped. The work itself is ostensibly a soundtrack to the visuals that accompany her performance but it works as an intricately realized sonic tapestry all its own. I knew the album was great, so I was expecting something special from her live show this time around and am happy to report that King delivered in every way.
Prior to the show King sent out a tweet asking anyone in the area for help securing an Ovation guitar due to a lost luggage mishap. Fortunately for all, she was able to secure a similar instrument and the show went on as planned. It's a credit to King's ability that I didn't even notice some mistakes caused by the occasional string sticking due to the still drying paint job on the body which she mentioned as she addressed the crowd following her set.
