Briana Marela, Waxahatchee and Globelamp at The Irenic - 3.3.16

San Diego's Irenic is a special venue. Nestled in an otherwise quiet North Park street corner, the former church was home to a stellar night of music this past Thursday night as Pacific Northwest native Briana Marela opened for Waxahatchee on the first night of a two week long tour through the west coast.

The thing that first strikes when listening to Marela are her direct, heartfelt lyrics. Marela most certainly wears her heart on her sleeve and it's this unaffected honesty that connected me to her set last week. As the audience gathered sat around the stage, it felt like we were almost eavesdropping on a private confessional at times.

If the night had a theme, it was that of three young, female artists each with very unique voices, talents and perspectives each presenting their art by themselves and completely on their own. While slightly reserved between songs, Marela's compositions were laid bare before the San Diego crowd as her vocals ethereal vocals soared and resonated, revealing a deeply thoughtful songwriter.

Check out my photos from the night, also featuring opener Globelamp and headliner Waxahatchee, below. For more on Briana Marela be sure to visit and follow @brianamarela on Twitter.
