LA's Echoplex was home to one of the more eclectic night's of music I'd seen in some time last Sunday night as Algeria's Imarhan stopped by for a set as part of a tour of the states in support of their self-titled debut album (available now via City Slang).
Everything about the music of Imarhan is built around the idea of deconstructing westerners' preconceived notions of popularized Tuareg music. Being that I had no preconceived notions about Tuareg music to begin with, the night was ostensibly my introduction not only to Imarhan but also Tuareg music (or at least Tuareg music heavily influenced by Western ) and I liked what I heard. Incorporating elements of rock, blues, funk and jazz, Imarhan wowed the crowd with extended jams and funky beats.
